White Pepper by Courtney Moy
AVAILABLE From the artist:My childhood consisted of a lot of junk food, chinese food, comics, and television. The two biggest culture shocks as a child for me were finding out the story of Aladdin was set in China, not set in the MIddle East and ultimately that fortune cookies were not Chinese. The dichotomy between the American and Chinese cultures of my youth is a consuming interest in my work. For this show I wanted to tie these two cultures of my youth and present. I was interested in using imagery I shot on my cell phone, something I felt was common and pretty accessible to youth today. I printed a series of coffee mugs at Walgreens with images of fortune slips that I made to look like Chinese fortune cookie sayings but are actually in my own verse. All the images were shot from my cell phone and collage edited on photoshop. I printed the images on coffee mugs because as a child I always associated coffee with adulthood. The work is meant to break the stereotype of what we associate with adulthood and maturity, as well as provide some humorous insight to the kitchen staples of my youth.
